Magnetic field therapy device
Development of novel magnetic field therapy device for physical vascular therapy
Starting situation
Our client is active in the field of medical technology. They planned to develop a modern family of devices for novel approaches to physical vascular therapy.
Project objectives
IMT has been commissioned to develop new devices: from concept to serial production. All specialist disciplines were involved in the project. The project team was developing the new mechanical assemblies, electronics, software, and system concept, and compiling the medical device documentation for regulatory approval. IMT was also requested to build the first devices and actively support the serial production of the devices at the client’s facility. The specifications regarding deadlines, development, and production costs must be strictly adhered to, as well as ensuring manufacturability at high volumes with consistently high quality.
Technical implementation
We took the industrial design developed by the client and integrated it into the new system architecture. After completing 3D modeling in Solid Works and stress-strength analysis of the highly stressed plastic parts using FEA and motion simulation, the entire housing was manufactured using the injection molding process. Various rapid prototyping methods were used, such as selective laser sintering (SLS), fused laser deposition modeling (FDM), and vacuum casting. The tilting mechanism was produced using highly durable, fiberglass-reinforced plastic parts.
IMT decided to use an ARM Cortex-M3 processor for the electronic control functions. Firmware development is based on the IMT framework and the UI was developed on WinCE 6.0 with IMT’s device application framework (DAF).
The lithium-ion battery module in the plastic housing was developed as a smart battery. A cost-optimized LCD segment display was used as the display solution for the different device versions and a 5.7″ VGA TFT display was used for the premium version.
Results
The worldwide launch of the project was implemented on schedule and within budget. The device received the Red Dot Design Award, and the client has been able to sell several thousand of the devices profitably.
