Technical basis and implementation

 

Flexibility through various modules

The IMT pneumatics toolbox is based on a modular system approach. It allows different modules to be combined depending on the application and seamlessly integrated into various development environments. A CAN bus connects all modules, which can be controlled and read out by a central control unit such as a Speedgoat machine (Simulink Real-Time) or a PC with a USB-CAN adapter.

 

As part of this project, several key modules were developed that significantly expand the functionality and versatility of the pneumatic toolbox, such as

  • Blower (turbine): A module that enables high speeds and precise control, essential for applications in ventilation technology.
  • Proportional valve (flow controller): This module controls the flow of gases, which is crucial in pneumatics.
  • Voltage regulator: This can be used to supply other modules or components with a regulated voltage.
  • Piezo pump module: Enables precise control of gas flows in applications requiring low flow rates.
  • Stepper motor module: For precise positioning and movement of mechanical components.
  • Sensor module: For recording pressure, mass flow and temperature, central to the control and monitoring of pneumatic systems.
  • UART module for IMT Analytics devices: Enables direct communication with specific measuring devices that can be found in the IMT Analytics portfolio. This makes it very easy to integrate precise flow measurement, for example.
  • ADC/DAC module: Converts analog signals into digital and vice versa to enable the integration of analog sensors and actuators.

 

Development process and advantages

To ensure successful product development, medical device manufacturers should define basic requirements and specifications as early as the planning phase. The systematic approach supports efficient prototyping, as the modules can be integrated into existing systems without major integration effort. The independence of the modules allows rapid testing and adaptation of different configurations, which is particularly advantageous in early product development and minimizes project risks. Furthermore, additional sensors or actuators can be seamlessly integrated into existing systems without having to adapt the electronics.

 

Challenges and solutions

Using the modular toolbox reduces development costs and offers developers more scope for innovative solutions. The toolbox is easy to use, even with minimal programming knowledge, and is suitable for use in various specialist disciplines. Thanks to 3D printing, the mechanical connection in test setups (housing, cover elements and brackets) can be customized. Additional modules, extensions and customized software can be developed at the customer's request. We recommend early involvement in product planning, ideally as early as the design phase. In this way, customized solutions can be developed right from the start and the modules can be optimally adapted to your requirements.

 

 

Example from a development process

The pneumatics toolbox from IMT AG has proven itself in projects and enables more efficient development processes with expansion options, for example for aspirators, anesthesia, CPAP/BIPAP and vacuum devices and other products. Even in the early phase of developing a ventilator, measurement data could be collected with prototype parts without having to develop specific electronics. Additional pressure sensors and flow measurements could be integrated into prototypes with minimal effort and processed simultaneously in real time on one system.
